800 million euros for the energy transition in the Canary Islands in 2026 with more than 100 energy communities

On February 17, the Ministry for Ecological Transition presented the Sustainable Strategy for the Canary Islands.

According to Angel Víctor Torres, the Canary Islands will double the renewable power, multiply by 10 the self-consumption and will have 1150 new public recharging points, which will turn the islands into a territory enabled for electric mobility.

the Strategy seeks to accelerate the change to an energy model based on efficiency, the use of renewables and sustainable mobility, complemented by the introduction of new technologies, such as storage or renewable hydrogen, over the next four years”. With an investment of some 800 million euros between public and private funds, the Strategy will enable the islands to double their renewable power, increase self-consumption tenfold, and become a 100% electric mobility enabled territory.

The strategy will have several areas of action:

  • Energy self-sufficiency of public administrations
  • Shared self-consumption and energy communities
  • The industrial sector
  • Renewable facilities re-powering
  • Sustainable mobility
  • The promotion of green projects
  • The dynamization and dissemination of the energy transition

Self-consumption will receive a huge boost, multiplying by 10 the current power, reaching 265 MW. This will exceed 50% of the power expected for the year 2030. Likewise, installations older than 25 years will be renewed. Likewise, all the projects will be accompanied by environmental improvements in the surroundings.

It is also estimated that 400 projects of public administrations and more than 100 energy communities will be developed. It will seek to encourage new companies and startups with the possible entry of the IDAE as a partner.
